Zero Waste Day is Saturday…Wondering What You Can Donate?

Andover Zero Waste Day is May 4th – Are You Ready?

Andover’s Zero Waste Day, Saturday, May 4th from 9am– Noon, Brickstone Square

The piles of “STUFF” are mounting – where are we going to bring it all: ZERO WASTE DAY (ZWD)

ZWD, take 9, is growing in great ways.

This year in addition to all they have collected in the past (CLOTHING, SHOES, ELECTRONICS, BABY & KIDS GEAR, FURNITURE, HOME GOODS, BOOKS/CDs/DVDs, BIKES, SOCCER GEAR) we are now also taking TOYS, we are taking TEXTILES – meaning all those clothes that are too worn to pass on, curtains that are dragging your room down, stuffed animals that are taking over your child’s room. Yes, they are taking all of these things and more including HARD PLASTICS (think Little Tykes toys that have children too big to play on them, milk crates that have been replaced with bins, garbage lids that have no home, broken recycling bins/laundry baskets), DECORATIVE ITEMS (lamps, wall art, candle holders), and STYROFOAM (clean foam with #6 recycling symbol, think packaging blocks).

ZWD is also growing locally. This year they have the Merrimack Valley YMCA participating as a collector of toys with a focus on blocks, games, manipulatives, plastic baby dolls and accessories, used workbook and craft items, and outdoor toys. Stories in the Streets, led by Nicolette Nordin Heavey, will also be there collecting books to give to each child who listens to her weave a wonderful tale at local farmers markets this spring, and Project Home Again, affiliated with Temple Emmanuel, will be taking all items related to helping someone set up a home that feels comfortable.

ZWD is a drive through donation/reuse and recycling event taking place at Brickstone Square at the intersection of York Street and Rte 133 in Andover. This event is open to all (residents and non-residents) and takes place rain or shine.
We look forward to helping you with the aftermath of spring cleaning, and keeping all of this out of our waste stream. ZWD is sponsored by Andover’s Recycling Committee. For more information please contact Eleanor Storch at eleanorstorch@verizon.net.

Thinking Cup: A Great Cup of Java

If you’re hanging around the Common and need a cup of coffee, there’s no place better than The Thinking Cup. The Thinking Cup has become a go-to place for both downtown workers and students from nearby Emerson College to get a well-crafted cup of coffee and something sweet. You can’t beat the layout inside, with subdued lighting and tables with old newspapers laminated to them. Of course, you can always find a good spot to read you book or paper. But don’t try to go online – wifi is as yet not available. Only Stumptown coffee is used, which was named Best in the World by no less than NPR and The New York Times. The baristas are knowledgeable and creative, so you’ll always get good, competent and friendly service. Grab a sweet nosh to enjoy with your coffee and relax!
